A forgotten chapter in postwar history

German refugees in Denmark from 1945 to 1949

This event is fully booked. Unfortunately we can no longer accept any more registrations.

The last German war refugees left the Oksböl camp in Denmark seventy years ago. Many have forgotten that at the end of the war, a quarter-million people, most of them from East Prussia, West Prussia and Pomerania, fled over the Baltic Sea to Denmark. Many remained interned there in camps for years. Thousands of graves remind us today, in Oksböl and other places, of the refugees, including thousands of children, who did not survive this time.

The Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation and the museums of the municipality of Varde in Denmark would like to make the 70th anniversary an occasion to jointly remember the fate of these refugees.

The "Denmark Refugee Museum" project documents in an impressive way how the memory of refugees in Denmark is being preserved for the future. The museum, designed by the Danish architects at the Bjarke Ingels Group, emerged upon the initiative of museums in the community of Varde, which is located at the historical site of the former camp of Oksböl, where a total of about 100,000 German refugees lived between 1945 and February 1949.
